چکیده

6 The nature and stability of coexistence of specialist species with more generalized 7 competitors present theoretical questions that have been difficult to resolve. Recent 8 surveys of bacteriophage host-ranges suggest that generalist phage often coexistent 9 with specialists. However, previous theoretical work has explained this coexistence only 1 0 in terms of strict genetic trade-offs, which are not consistently observed when phage are 1 1 challenged to evolve to multiple hosts in laboratory environments. Here we use the 1 2 framework of optimal foraging to identify conditions that might prevent generalists from 1 3 outcompeting specialist relatives. Our analysis shows that heterogeneities in phage life-1 4 history properties make host-range specialist more viable, and that endogenous 1 5 fluctuations in host density permit a narrow window of stable coexistence between 1 6 specialists and generalists without the need for genetic trade-offs. These results are 1 7 especially relevant for understanding the barriers to the evolution of broader host-1 8 ranges in bacteriophage and other pathogens with similar life-cycles.

Optimal Foraging Predicts the Ecology but Not the Evolution of Host Specialization in Bacteriophages

We explore the ability of optimal foraging theory to explain the observation among marine bacteriophages that host range appears to be negatively correlated with host abundance in the local marine environment. We modified Charnov's classic diet composition model to describe the ecological dynamics of the related generalist and specialist bacteriophages phiX174 and G4, and confirmed that special...

Pleiotropic costs of niche expansion in the RNA bacteriophage phi 6.

Natural and experimental systems have failed to universally demonstrate a trade-off between generalism and specialism. When a trade-off does occur it is difficult to attribute its cause to antagonistic pleiotropy without dissecting the genetic basis of adaptation, and few previous experiments provide these genetic data. Here we investigate the evolution of expanded host range (generalism) in th...

Isolation and Characterization of Lytic Bacteriophages from Wastewater against Listeria monocytogenes

Background and Aims: In the current study, two bacteriophages were isolated from the wastewater sources and characterized by lytic activity against the Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) bacterium. Materials and Methods:  50 wastewater samples were collected from the disposal sites. The phages were isolated from the treated samples using the double agar overlay method with L. monocytoge...

Optimal foraging by bacteriophages through host avoidance.

Optimal foraging theory explains diet restriction as an adaptation to best utilize an array of foods differing in quality, the poorest items not worth the lost opportunity of finding better ones. Although optimal foraging has traditionally been applied to animal behavior, the model is easily applied to viral host range, which is genetically determined. The usual perspective for bacteriophages (...

Control of nonlinear systems using a hybrid APSO-BFO algorithm: An optimum design of PID controller

This paper proposes a novel hybrid algorithm namely APSO-BFO which combines merits of Bacterial Foraging Optimization (BFO) algorithm and Adaptive Particle Swarm Optimization (APSO) algorithm to determine the optimal PID parameters for control of nonlinear systems. To balance between exploration and exploitation, the proposed hybrid algorithm accomplishes global search over the whole search spa...
